What to do when boredom overtakes our lives

Even Reggy and Elsa are bored most of the day as I keep them inside.

Besides the repetitive everyday chores I have been doing like keeping a clean house, cooking meals, Internet browsing and a good dose of TV time, what else is there to do? Baking of course like this apple-walnut cake. But wait; if I keep baking cakes we’d be overweight by the time the Covit-19 restrictions are lifted.

For me it is still way too cold to go out into the garden. This springtime the weather here in Ontario is way behind the usual warmer temperatures we’ve had in previous years. Actually I think it is simply awful as I watched snow flurries yesterday evening twirling around the deck.

This is what it looked like last week

However, the local bird population is a tough bunch. They have been busy building nests through snow, hail and heavy rain. I am happy to report that all the birdhouses at our property are now occupied. So I started bird watching and have been trying to capture some pictures of the nesting process, which takes patience.

There is a Robin’s nest on the second floor window at our neighbor’s house that I can see from my kitchen window. It is quite a distance away but with my binoculars I can observe it quite well. However, my telelens on my camera is not as powerful, but I took some pictures anyway. The male and female Robins take turns feeding the young.

This is the actual distance to our neighbour's house

In the tree next to our neighbor’s house at the same height as the Robins nest, there is a Mourning Dove nest. I have been observing that the male and female Doves take turns breeding on the nest, but it is too far away for me to see if they already have chicks in them. I have felt sorry for those birds, as those nests are not very well protected from the elements.

Mourning Dave nest in the tree if you look closely

The birdhouses at our garage wall are on the small side and I think those are House Sparrows breeding there, but I will update once I know for sure.

Lets hope we get some warm temperatures soon to enjoy some gardening, because I am getting restless.

I heard the humming sound of the drone overhead

Thanks for dropping by.

  1. You like many others are looking forward to the real Spring Temperatures that we normally see at this time. You might consider taking the dogs for a walk but just practice Social Distancing with others.

    It's about time.

    1. Our dogs sure would like a walk, the problem lies with their mommy who doesn't like the cold and wet outdoors ;))

  2. I live in the Ottawa Valley east of Algonquin. We've been setting cold records the last couple of nights. Doesn't seem to be bothering the birds though. Lots of robins, woodpeckers and finches around. Our Pheobe is nesting in the front porch again.

    1. I guess we shouldn't presume just we are cold that the birds are freezing too. It seems they are oblivious to the weather conditions and keep on doing what they always do at this time of year. For me its a joy to watch the breeding process.

  3. Love the drone shots. Your fur kids look very bored. Once it warms up they will be happier. Birds chose the strangest spots to build a nest.

Just want to let you know that I have been reading all our posts but today is the first time I have actually been allowed to comment.

    1. In the past weeks I had trouble with some comments and noticed something strange in my blog. Google is the culprit. The dogs would love to romp around in the garden if I would let them. Its still too wet though.

  4. Good to hear from you. Like the drone shots. We have lots of birds and at least two geese sitting on nests that we are waiting to see the young. Take care, stay safe and healthy.

    1. You guys should play together with your drones. Once the chicks hatch I bet those little goslings waddling around your property will be very cute.

  5. We only have one birdhouse here on the property and I don't think it is ever occupied. Not sure why, it is visited just not resided in. The only nests we've seen are hummers nests and one robin's nest up in our roof vent one year. Great pictures, Marlene!
    Soon, spring is almost here!

    1. My first birdhouse didn't have any occupants. I moved it from the north side of the shed to the east side of the garage and immediately birds were interested. I then added another birdhouse to the east and south side and they have two sets of nests in them every year. I also narrowed the entrance on one of them and enlarged the entrance hole on another and mounted twigs for landing. Robins prefer just flat boards but I had them in the birdhouse too. BTW I'm disappointed by Blogger reducing the pixels of my pictures, making them fuzzy.

  6. Your puppies do look pretty bored...:) but cute.
Our daughter was saying the same thing the other day when we talked. She is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That between the cold and the snow she did not want to be outside. The dog she said was getting very quick and short walks.
Birds do pick strange places sometime to build their nest. We even had one in a hanging flower pot one year. Hope you weather warms up soon.

    1. We are all stuck in the waiting game. I don't like cold weather but as soon as the temps rise I am outside and don't want to come back in ;)) The dogs were spoiled with all the walks they got in Florida. There are not so many opportunities for the birds to nest so they make do with whatever they can find, even flower pots.
